Summary of the context and overall objectives of the project

Karos ambition is to leverage collaborative consumption and artificial intelligence to revolutionize commuting in suburban areas, take cars off the road and curb related carbon emissions. The Karos solution extends the current public transportation network with unbeatable performances: a network extension & densification by a factor of 10 and a transport cost divided by 10 compared to traditional solutions (bus and on-demand). UNITE objectives is make carpooling successful at large scale, changing users daily mobility habits and integrate this new means of public transport into the emerging Mobility as a Service (MaaS) applications.

Work performed from the beginning of the project to the end of the period covered by the report and main results achieved so far

There was significant progress on all the work packages of the project, even if the pandemic impacted the company and forced us to delay the growth of the R&D team for several months.
The integration in the MAAS public transportation system (WP2) faced good results. A proof of concept was released and we plan to release a major deployment by the end of the year.
Concerning the work on technical scalability (WP3), we demonstrated several improvements that improved the quality of the product and reduced the computational costs.
We developed tools to conduct the first analysis for Mobility habits change management (WP4) that we started to experiment successfully.

Progress beyond the state of the art and expected potential impact (including the socio-economic impact and the wider societal implications of the project so far)

UNITE and KAROS make carpooling efficient and flexible on daily commutes thanks to a disruptive technological approach : its AI-powered engine analyzes users daily commutes, automatically generates offer and demand and optimizes matching between drivers and passengers. Main impacts of the project are: (i) reduced CO2 emissions, (ii) reduced local pollution, (iii) reduced car congestion, (iv) higher buying power and (v) optimized commuting times.
