Digitalization of prosthetic socket personalization workflows trough artificial intelligence

Project description

A helping hand for next-generation prosthetics

The history of prosthetic limbs spans several centuries. Much has changed from the hinged joints developed in the 19th century to suction socks for lower-limb amputees after World War II. The future of prosthetics is lighter, stronger and more technologically advanced. The EU-funded DigiSocket project will support a young and vibrant Norwegian company to further develop its high-quality prosthetic solutions – a myoelectrical prosthetic hand using a unique hydraulic-based actuation principle – by recruiting an innovation associate with a high level of expertise in machine learning and advanced ICT concepts like computer vision. This SME innovation associate programme project will assist the company to initiate R&D activities with a view to expanding its portfolio.

Objective

Hy5 is a young and vibrant company, working towards the development of cost effective, accessible and high-quality prosthetic solutions. We have CE-marked, FDA-registered and Canada approved our first product, a disruptive myoelectrical prosthetic hand using a unique hydraulic-based actuation principle developed in-house – capitalizing our expertise in mechanics as a central technological enabler to develop a unique prosthetic hand offering an optimal balance between gripping functionality and overall cost. However, Hy5 aims to go one step further being a product-based company and we envision improve the existing value chain by empowering a digital revolution –providing more effective alternatives to several activities in the prosthetic workflows that use decade-old technologies.

However, we do not possess in-house expertise in machine learning and advanced ICT concepts such as computer vision, that are essential for this project and therefore looking to recruit an Innovation Associate with the required skill set, in order to complement. The SME Innovation Associate programme project is thus necessary for Hy5 to initiate R&D activities with a view to expand its portfolio and ultimately positioning Hy5 as a key player up and downstream to the acquisition of a prosthetic hand. Acquiring these skills is thus fundamental for Hy5 to keep competitive advantage over the coming years – but more importantly, will allow for Hy5 to outgrow into a forefront innovation player at global scale.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

CSA - Coordination and support action
