New skills for vocational guidance in higher education

Objective

Almost all European universities employ guidance counsellors to support their students with their career progression. The employment of a highly-skilled section of the European workforce is influenced by this key occupational group. There are large differences in the goals, organisation and methodology of vocational guidance, as well as in the type of staff and their qualifications. This diversity in the member states needs to be mapped and shared with a view to improving the overall quality of guidance. In addition, future training for vocational guidance counsellors must provide new skills to address the needs of an increasingly diverse student population, to prepare students for a European labour market, to use new technologies and to provide a holistic student-centred guidance model.

The partners will map the organisation of guidance in higher education in all EU member states and examine how guidance tasks are carried out. An inventory of new trends and needs will be drawn up. Training will be then reviewed in the light of the new skills required. Country reports and an overall report will provide a detailed analysis of guidance in higher education and of likely future developments.

Impact
The reports produced by the project will present recommendations and guidelines for the introduction of European-oriented training that can enhance the professional effectiveness and development of guidance counsellors.
