Objective
Mentally ill and socially disadvantaged people often have no knowledge of foreign languages at all. This obstacle has to be overcome for them to be able to gather occupational and, thus, social and cultural experience within the countries of the EU. Because of their changed perceptive structure, this target group requires special methods of teaching so as not to burden their often poorly developed sense of self-esteem and to avoid frustration. The aim of this project is to design, develop, evaluate and distribute a language-training module through which the participants can acquire a level of proficiency that will enable them to join the labour market where basic linguistic knowledge is required and ensure their ability to complete a traineeship in another country under one of the EU support programmes.
The target group will be involved in producing the teaching materials. The learning content will be divided into practically relevant areas of life and be closely linked to information specific to the countries concerned. Traditional grammar exercises will be omitted to the greatest possible extent. Instead, fixed idiomatic expressions will be trained and mastered. The target groups are made up of EU citizens without appropriate school education or vocational qualifications plus people whose knowledge has been affected by illness and are undergoing a vocational reintegration process. The programme is also directed at instructors, pedagogical specialist and teaching staff in the vocational training field, as well as linguistic and social education institutions teaching basic foreign-language proficiency.
Impact
The project provides back-up for the vocational education of disadvantaged people by improving their knowledge of foreign languages via a targeted methodology, thus enhancing their prospects of access to the labour market.
