Objective
Currently, vocational foreign language training for small rural companies is hard to find, unreliable and expensive. This project aims to address this situation by helping meet deficiencies in current open and distance learning (ODL) and teaching by using existing and emerging telecommunications systems such as video conferencing and the Internet.
The project will in the first instance, train a cohort of specialist trainers in the methodologies of delivering languages at a distance and the use of associated telematics. They will then use these ODL skills to deliver language modules to a pilot group of SMEs. The project will produce a model training course for trainers and a pilot number of foreign language modules suitable for delivery at a distance. It will explore appropriate delivery methodologies and appropriate ODL techniques. A guidance manual will be published at the end of the project. The training itself will be via ODL and supported self-study.
Impact
It is expected that the project will meet deficiencies in current provision of training of language trainers in and by ODL methods and in so doing create a network of specialist ODL tutors trained in effective good practice techniques and transnationally accredited.
