Objective
The social integration of deaf people and the hard of hearing is closely related to the problem of sign language communication. In many countries no specific educational material currently exists for sign language instruction. Furthermore, there is no standard sign language terminology for computing terms, which make computer training courses problematic for the deaf. This project aims firstly to develop a sign language curriculum with guidelines for teaching and instruction. Secondly it aims to develop a sign language vocabulary for the most common and important terms used in computing. For each task, a different working group will be formed comprising deaf tutors, education professionals specialised in training deaf people, sign language interpreters and computer experts.
The end product will be a guide in book-form, a sign language training curriculum and a video cassette or a CD-Rom of sign language vocabulary terms. These products will be disseminated to the different target groups by the Greek Federation of the Deaf, the Specialised Centre of Argyroupolis, the Total Communication Centre of Denmark and the Institute of Voordoven.
Impact
The skills and occupational profile of deaf tutors will be up-graded as a result of this project. Deaf people will benefit from increased access to computer courses and ultimately to computer technology itself.
