Supersonic material ablation at THz repetition rates for ultra-efficient laser micromachining

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - SUPERSONIC (Supersonic material ablation at THz repetition rates for ultra-efficient laser micromachining)

Reporting period: 2021-06-01 to 2022-11-30

Launched to develop a simplified, thus lower-cost yet record-high efficient ultrafast laser for high-precision industrial material processing, the Project SUPERSONIC developed a prototype laser that is expected to cost several-fold less than existing ultrafast lasers to manufacture. This prototype was tested in real-world applications. We have achieved up to ten-fold higher efficiencies and speeds than current ultrafast lasers. Remarkably, we achieved peak material removal rates that exceeded the speed of sound. A business plan has been developed to assess the potential of and outline the path for commercialising this new laser technology. Preparatory steps have been taken for the foundation of a company to exploit this invention.
