Objective
Dental implants are artificial pillars inserted into the jawbone to support a permanent dental prosthesis. This is a delicate surgical operation. The existence of a new procedure of computer-assisted dental implantology, VISIMPLANT, is a major step forward, and entails a reformulation of dental surgeons' training.
This pilot project will complement continuing training provision for practitioners through virtual learning, and facilitate the introduction into universities of the most powerful medical imaging techniques. Traditional surgical procedure has a high failure rate, around 10 to 15%, because there is no link between the pre-implantation assessment and the actual surgical operation. This innovative procedure will fill in the gaps using computer technology. New training will generate a pre-implantation diagnosis based on a radiological examination of the jawbones and define the operation strategy and the size and position of the implant.
VISIMPLANT combines information technology, simulation and robotics and will, for example, enable trainers to supervise the trainee student at every step of the virtual operation, advise them by showing pre-defined positioning solutions, or by instructing them to try certain steps again. This virtual learning method will be disseminated in specialist scientific journals, at dental surgery conferences and during trade shows. The surgical equipment and training tool will be made commercially available.
Impact
The main results expected are the creation of a simulation training tool and the production of an appropriate surgical guide.
