Objective
Research into the educational and occupational experience of teenage mothers is rare. The three main objectives of this survey and analysis project are to:
- to identify differences in the level and type of education and occupational training opportunities for teenage mothers throughout Europe by identifying current practice and structure which affect access;
- provide recommendation and strategies for the inclusion of these teenage mothers in training programmes; and
- provide a background for young mothers to be able to find employment.
The survey will include three phases, each lasting a year. The first phase will establish a steering committee and focus groups representing, in each county, training agencies, educational and social services agencies, and teenage mothers themselves. This phase will also entail research on existing literature and statistics on teenage fertility and the start of the survey of education and training opportunities. In the second phase, case studies will be drawn up from best practice in each participating country. The last phase will see the production of national reports on the above-mentioned survey and case studies.
The results will include criteria to judge the effectiveness of education and training provision for teenage mothers, and recommendations for inclusion strategies for teenage mothers in training programmes.
Impact
These surveys will act as an important basis for further work with teenage mothers in Europe by breaking down the barriers to their employment.
