INTELLIGENT WHEELCHAIR NAVIGATION SYSTEM

Objectif

The project aims to validate and transfer state-of-the art technology in industrial mobile robotics to the Rehabilitation Market (RM) and specifically to systems controlling wheelchairs and other similar devices. AUTONOMY targets the promotion, enhancement and integration of the research results achieved by the major EU project for wheelchair navigational aids. These results will be incorporated in a prototype Intelligent Wheelchair Navigation System, which will be the final deliverable of the project. The main objectives of the project are :- to validate and promote the results of the EC project SENARIO and the Smart Wheelchair Programme of CALL.- to transfer and adapt mobile robotics technologies used in industry to the sector of healthcare services (rehabilitation market). The project addresses the requirement of motor/mentally disabled and elderly for independence. The project will provide the background for a device that would restore the maximum of personal autonomy offering the user technological aid for autonomous, unattended and safe mobility. The project will involve significant user consultation at all levels, especially in the evaluation, to ensure that the final outcome will fulfil user requirements. The project aims to utilise advanced sensors and mobile robotics technologies for the development of a pre-commercial prototype Intelligent Wheelchair Navigation System - AUTONOMY. The system will provide conventional powered wheelchairs with the functionality required for autonomous navigation adapted to the requirements of specific users. Project results will be evaluated through extensive tests in real life conditions. AUTONOMY prototype is planned to promote the project and disseminate project results.Conformance with the standards, expandability and interoperability are project concerns. Targeting a wide user group, the system is designed to be modular in order to meet the requirements of individual potential users. The project result could become commercial at a later stage as a wheelchair accessory for the full range of powered wheelchairs.
