Objective
Novel "smart" tribological coatings with tailored out-gassing properties will be developed for using in intelligent vacuum machinery of new generation. The peculiar property of the "smart" tribological coatings is that, in addition to good tribological performance, they have given gas desorption behaviour controlled by destructive processes, i.e. fracture, plastic deformation, wear, etc. The coatings should be tailored in such a way that they will be able to send "desorption message" when some failure of the coating has happened.
To achieve the aim of the project the following stages have been identified:
(1) survey and analysis of existing tribological coating in relevance to vacuum applications,
(2) experimental research of the tribodesorption behaviour fo r the wide range of materials in order to achieve fundamental understanding of the phenomenon,
(3) modelling of tribodesorption and
(4) development of the coatings.
The later stage includes development of the structure and chemical composition of the coating, selection of appropriate deposition techniques, etc. providing given out-gassing properties and behaviour of the tribologocal coatings.
