Horizontal action on optical networks

Objetivo

The HORIZON project is a co-ordinating and consensus building project spanning the photonic network domain within ACTS. Since in ACTS many projects propose to develop and demonstrate optical networks, nationally or as trans-European networks, such projects are likely to face many common problems and requirements. It is therefore the objective of this project to co-ordinate activities within this area, such that common problems are discussed and different approaches recognised.
The HORIZON project already organised three topical workshops in conjunction with the ACM meetings, covering all relevant fields in the area of the Photonic Domain ; High Speed Systems / Access networks / Transport Networks. These workshops are targetted at information exchange and at inter-project discussions. The Photonic Networking Forum workshops co-ordinated by HORIZON (at ECOC '95, ECOC '96 and co-organisation at OFC '96) specifically are aimed at stimulating the exchange of ideas with non-European projects and/or organisations. Until now, workshops have been very successful and the outcome of the discussion sessions have been reflected within the Photonic Roadmap. A draft version of this Roadmap on Photonic Technologies and Networking has been compiled and made available to the involved ACTS projects. HORIZON also initiated the generation of ACTS Application Notes and already around 30 of these Notes have been generated by the projects in the Photonic Domain. To optimise information exchange and availability related to the ACTS Photonic Domain projects, HORIZON has set up a WWW-server, containing up-to-date and relevant information related to photonic projects and activities. Continuous effort is spent in optimising both the information content and the user interface of the server.

A major outcome of this project is the HORIZON Roadmap for Photonic Technologies and Networking. The topical workshops and meetings which are organised by HORIZON will form, together with inputs from the projects involved in optical networking, an important input to this Roadmap. The Roadmap will contain the sections A: Networks, B: Systems, Subsystems and Routing, C: Component Technology.
Expected Impact
Dissemination of the obtained conclusions is a major goal of the project. Those conclusions will contribute to the definition and specification of future optical components, subsystems and network architectures. The project thus assists in the interworking and interoperability between different types and different parts of the network and in the development of standard bodies for optical networking. The project also co-operates with the Infowin project for further dissemination of results of photonic research and trials.

Main contributions to the programme objectives:
Main deliverables
Co-ordination of ACTS projects working with optical networks
Contribution to the programme
Coherence and synergy between RTD projects working with optical networks
Technical Approach
The project establishes co-ordination within the major work areas of optical networking from all ACTS projects in the Photonic Domain. To that end (electronic) contact and information exchange is maintained with a technical liaison person in each ACTS project involved in optical networking. This co-ordination is realised through the issue of brief reports, organisation of specialist meetings, workshops and broad concertation type meetings where appropriate. Electronic means of communicating are used as much as possible for the co-ordination and information dissemination process.
This co-ordination is currently being extended to involve COST and Eurescom projects. The project will also establish links with optical network activities outside the EU, e.g. in USA and Japan. In particular, HORIZON supports the organisation of the Photonic Networking Forum workshops in Europe. These activities will assist in establishing the concepts of global interconnectivity.
Key Issues
Co-ordinate and draw together projects involved in defining optical networks.
Provide the co-ordination necessary to ensure interworking and interoperability between different transport networks and access networks.
Provide co-ordination between system and component oriented projects.
Support co-ordination with National Hosts and the ACTS programme in the area of optical networking.
Provide co-ordination with non-European countries to support the development of global optical networks.
Assist in the development of standards in the area of optical networking.
Evaluate different techno-economic studies of optical networks performed by other projects.
Summary of Trial
The project is such that no practical experimentation is foreseen. Demonstrations of the HORIZON web server were already given at several occasions.
