International trials with users and networks from European testbeds

Objetivo

Main Objective

ITUNET aims at demonstrating a Full Service Network (FSN) supporting a variety of network, business and office interactive applications. One of the main objectives of the project is to study how the existing telephone access network can be upgraded by utilising xDSL based technologies to form a cost-efficient integrated service network providing the necessary capacity and functionality for broadband services. The intention is to provide 25-50 MBit/s to the general public. The purpose of the field trials is to prove the viability of the adopted network topology for the realisation of an end-to-end ATM network providing a selection of broadband applications. Through the trials, ITUNET seeks to gain valuable experience, both with regard to the installation and operation of the proposed platforms and with regard to the end-user's perception of the supplied broadband services.

Technical Approach

Innovative use of inverse multiplexing over VDSL makes it possible to aggregate bandwidths in the range of 100-1000 MBit/s between a main ATM switch and nodes further out in the existing telephone access network. Each remote node forms the kernel of a small geographical area with an approximate radius of 1 kilometre, providing its customers with 25-50 MBit/s broadband access by using standard VDSL technology. The network nodes will perform both inverse multiplexing and statistical multiplexing. A simplified prototype of the node will be realised in the project.

The offered bandwidth is expected to be sufficient for the complete range of emerging broadband and narrowband services, thus demonstrating that the proposed network concept meets the future demands from the general public. A number of field trials are planned in order to assess thoroughly the service, network and technology aspects related to the adopted delivery platforms. The techno-economic aspects of implementing the proposed technology in a real network will be evaluated using tools and methodologies developed in the projects ACTS / OPTIMUM / TERA and RACE / TITAN.

Summary of Trial

First trials are scheduled for the second half of 1999. These will take place in Oslo, Paris and Switzerland, each of them addressing different areas of utilisation The Oslo trial focuses on using the technology in the existing telephone access network. In Paris the objective is to use the technology in corporate networks, while in Switzerland co-existence with other technologies such as APONs is the main objective.
Expected Achievements

ITUNET addresses the important issue of access network upgrade strategies for emerging broadband and narrowband services. The knowledge and experience obtained will be a source of valuable support for:

-telecom and data network operators, in upgrading their infrastructures to high-capacity performance

-the uptake of high-capacity residential and business services in Europe.

Expected Impact

ITUNET will validate the ability to provide real broadband access to the public in a cost-effective manner, without the need for the large-scale replacement of the existing access network infrastructure. This in turn is expected to increase consumer awareness and utilisation of broadband services, as well as encourage the transformation of consumer habits in the areas of tele- working- from home. At the operator level, ITUNET will contribute towards the achievement of a common standard.

Main contributions to the programme objectives:
Main deliverables
A network architecture and technology specification for a high capacity broadband access network, based purely upon re-using the existing local telephone cables, together with inverse multiplexing through VDSL modems.
Contribution to the programme
Will enable telecoms operators, already in the immediate future, to meet and exploit the rapidly expanding consumer broadband demands at the required QoS level over their existing local telephone networks.
Key Issues

In the service domain:

-demonstration of the viability of full service networks using existing infrastructure

-evaluation of the techno-economics of the various systems In the network technology domain:

-demonstration of a broadband integrated service network using existing infrastructure

-evaluation of combined VDSL and ATM inverse multiplexing techniques to enhance the bearer capability of the existing twisted pair access network.
