Objetivo
Main Objective
PRISMA aims to increase the flexibility of fibre-wireless networks, by introducing multiple wavelength channels in the fibre network and selecting one or more wavelength channels as needed at the wireless base transceiver stations (BTSs). PRISMA's main objectives are:
-to develop strategies for dynamic reconfiguration of fibre-wireless networks by means of High-Density Wavelength Division Multiplexing (HDWDM) techniques
-to develop strategies for upgrading fibre-based access networks to deliver wireless services
-to understand how HDWDM techniques can support radio independence and improve Quality of Service in relation to hand-over and macro-diversity for 3rd generation mobile networks
-to understand the impact of HDWDM techniques on radio multi-bearer support, multi-connection, and asymmetric wireless services
-to develop cost-effective HDWDM optical system modules supporting digital baseband and analogue RF signals
-to demonstrate the viability of a flexible HDWDM fibre-wireless system for broadband ATM nomadic applications in a laboratory set-up and in a small-scale field trial
Technical Approach
Multiple wavelength channels will be used for signal transport in the passively split fibre network, feeding the BTSs. One or more wavelength channels as needed can be selected at each BTS. By setting this wavelength selection from the base station controller (BSC) or from higher levels in the fixed network, the base stations can be reconfigured to accommodate the variations in traffic offerings. Thus the cell sizes can be virtually adapted to capacity demands, e.g. to deal more efficiently with temporary "hot spots" in the network. Moreover, the various wavelength channels constitute independent transport channels, which allows several service providers or several signal formats to coexist without interference on the same fixed infrastructure. Introducing these wavelength channels on already existing fibre infrastructures (e.g. CATV fibre-coax networks) to support fixed and mobile services would reduce substantially the installation and deployment costs of wireless services. As the wavelength selectivity needs to be introduced only at those base stations where it is required, a gradual upgrading scenario can be followed, leaving the other base stations still compatible with the services being offered.
The main application studied will be nomadic ATM-based computing, employing 622 Mbit/s ATM per wavelength channel in the fibre part of the network, and 20 Mbit/s ATM wireless connections to portable PCs.
Transceiver Stations
Summary of Trial
In a laboratory set-up, interworking of a HDWDM ATM-PON system with a wireless ATM access module will be tested under a variety of network conditions. This set-up will integrate a number of novel and adapted optical modules, including the wavelength-switching functionality. Towards the end of the project, a small-scale field trial is planned in Ghent (B), to assess the potential of the system in a realistic user environment. From the university premises of IMEC, interconnections will be made with primary and secondary schools. These schools will get access on a broadband wireless ATM basis to the university's network, and via this network to the national R&D communication network (plus the full repertoire of Internet services) as well.
Expected Achievements
The project will identify and verify flexible reconfiguration strategies for broadband fibre-wireless access networks, employing dynamic wavelength allocation at the wireless base stations. Cost-effective system modules and network reconfiguration protocols will be tested for nomadic broadband applications. The potential of the system concept for 3rd generation mobile networks will be assessed.
Expected Impact
Applying PRISMA's flexible wavelength multiplexing techniques will yield a significant improvement in the operation efficiency and versatility of fibre-wireless networks. The system concept will stimulate the introduction of broadband wireless applications; as such, it will promote e.g. tele-working by offering support of nomadic computing, giving employees the same network capabilities for their portable computer at home as in the office. Its innovative optical routing techniques will also contribute to new system strategies to increase the Quality of Service in 3rd generation mobile networks.
