Measurement of Ozone on Airbus In-Service Aircraft

Objetivo

The objective is to contribute to the evaluation of aircraft impact on the atmosphere, by improving the scientific basic knowledge through extensive measurements in the atmosphere. Five automatic units for measuring ozone and water vapour in the air will be installed aboard in-service Airbus A-340 aircraft to realise a sound data base of atmospheric composition and trace species chemistry.
Most of the objectives, initially planned in MOZAIC, have been reached with: realization and flight operation of automatic 03 & H20 equipments, successful flight measurements over several years, constitution of a sound data base, establishment of ozone and water vapour climatologies, first scientific interpretations and model validations.
The interpretation of data by scientists will involve various kinds of studies:

- Climatology of ozone and water vapour near the tropopause
- Identification of ozone sources and sinks at flight levels
- Relations between ozone and water vapour contents with air traffic densities
- Comparison of data on flight routes with the background atmosphere
- Validation of 2D and 3D models especially in the higher troposphere
- Evaluation of actual impact of subsonic aircraft on atmospheric chemistry and evolution forecasted with air traffic development.

Expected Achievements

The resulting data bank, needed for the evaluation of the atmospheric impact of subsonic fleets, will provide for :

Near term applications:

- Improvement of the 2D, 3D models near the tropopause (ozone sources and sinks, latitudinal distribution of water vapour), leading to a better qualitative and quantitative estimation of aircraft impact by emissions simulation;
- Statistical evaluation of aircraft impact (NOx emissions effect on ozone, H2O emissions quantification for greenhouse effect) by correlation between the measurement data and the air traffic density.

Medium and long term applications:

- Scientific conclusions for aviation development compatible with the environment: engines and aircraft future development, emissions regulations, aircraft operations;
- Creation of a work structure, including scientists, aircraft manufacturers and airlines, able to manage environmental implications.
