Objective
The aim of the CONTAMRUNWAY study is to support the J.A.A. needs in reviewing the validity of the existing requirements for operation on runways contaminated by rain/snow/ice for small and commuter aircraft.
Because of the width of the subject, this study is limited to the determination of the contaminated runway drag and the aquaplanning speed of wheels free to roll (no braking), i.e. :
- identify the most important parameters acting in the drag.
- assess difference with AMJ 25 x 1591 "Supplementary Performance information for take-off from wet runways and for operation on runways contaminated by standing water, slush, loose snow, compacted
snow or ice".
- establish elements to reformulate theoretical drag on contaminated runway and determine the aquaplaning speed of wheels free to roll, by tests conducted in water ponds.
- give elements to relevant authorities in order to modify if necessary the current regulations.

Technical exchange will be made when appropriate with two ongoing projects :
- CAA funded ESDU research, which is mainly a review of existing data.
- Five year Winter Runway Friction Measurement Program conducted in North America by Transport CANADA, FAA, NASA, and National Research Council CANADA. This program concentrates on the deceleration performance (braking) and the contaminant is mainly snow.
