Objective
The main objective of the project is to increase dessert Rubus in Europe, outside the traditional season, by growing primocane fruiting (PF) raspberries and other Rubus crops. Annual cropping PF types can be grown in the South, where there is insufficient winter chilling for traditional types, and in the North, where they escape winter injury.
The purpose is to produce new Rubus material adapted to particular environmental conditions, where at present Rubus crops are not grown. The proposed biotechnological approaches are new in Rubus; up to now there are no reports of Rubus protoplast culture and fusion. Work on biotechnological aspects of Rubus have potential, important implications for breeding.
Use of conventional breeding and biotechnology to produce different Rubus crops. Agronomy investigations in areas with mild winters will allow these crops to be economically useful in rural areas (family farms) and the final consumers will have greater choice of fresh fruit in the winter.
