IMPROVING APHID AND NOCTUID PEST CONTROL IN THE FRAMEWORK OF INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT PROGRAMMES FOR VEGETABLE CROPS

Objective

The project targets are two aphid species, Aphis gossypii (Ag) and Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Me) and several noctuids species.
Goals and tasks proposed :

- characterisation of Ag populations by means of RFLP/RAPD;
- identification of native natural enemies of aphids and noctuids and evaluation of selected native and semi-commercial parasitoids and predators in field and laboratory conditions (tasks related with the goal 1);
- study of the relationships between catches of the pheromone/light/feeding traps and on-plant noctuid populations, determination of spatial/temporal dynamics of aphids and selected natural enemy populations for monitoring purposes and optimisation of introduction rates;
- determination of the mode of action and effectiveness of novel Insect Growth Regulators (IGRs) and Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) strains on selected noctuids, evaluation of their selectivity on natural enemies. Finally, practical guidelines for IPM in tomato and cucumber crops will be elaborated.
