Objective
The overall objective is to develop in vitro assays using immortalised human cell lines for increased food safety. Specifically this will be achieved by fulfilling the following objectives:
- developing immortalised cell lines from human target organs and characterising their metabolic competence in comparison with normal tissues - correcting metabolic deficiencies in the developed cell lines by genetic manipulation
- establishing assays for cytoxicity, genotoxicity and malignant transformation using the developed cell lines.
Completion of this project will allow more rapid prediction of target organ-specific harmful or beneficial effects of food, including contaminants and additives. It will contribute to reduction, refinement and eventual replacement of animal tests.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
