SHELF EDGE FISHERIES AND OCEANOGRAPHY STUDY

Objective

The study will concentrate on the distributions and migrations of the five commercially important fish species (mackerel, horse mackerel, blue whiting, hake and herring) near the shelf edge, from Portugal to Norway, and their relationship with the oceanography of this area. Particular attention will be paid to modelling circulation, especially the shelf edge current. A survey will be conducted mostly to determine the distributions of the different life history stages of the study species along the shelf edge.

Hydrographic data will be collected to allow the development of an expanded and refined model of the shelf edge current.

The results should significantly enhance our understanding of the mechanisms controlling fish distributions, and therefore the effects of any environmental changes and related directly to stock management questions.
