IMPROVING THE EFFICIENCY OF SUCKLER COW PRODUCTION SYSTEMS IN LESS-FAVOURED AREAS (LFAS) OF THE EC, CONSISTENT WITH THE EXTENSIFICATION OBJECTIVES OF THE CAP

Objective

The objective is to develop practical management strategies to significantly shorten the interval from calving to first heat in suckler beef cows of different breeds and forage environments of the EU.
Specific objectives:

- To establish endocrine, metabolic and ovarian follicle profiles and their relationships in the post-calving anoestrous period.
- To determine effects of nutrition (including pre- and post-calving) and suckling frequency on the post-calving anoestrous interval.
- To determine, for breeds differing in body size, milk potential and adaptability, the effects of nutrition and rearing period on post-calving anoestrous interval, reproductive efficiency and suitability for different forage environments of the EU.
- To develop a computer modelling programme to determine energetic efficiencies for selected cow breeds and production environments of the EU.
