CONCERTED ACTION : COORDINATION OF RESEARCH IN FISHERY ECONOMICS

Objective

There are only six institutes within the EC with a regular programme in fisheries economics and a specialised staff which carry out independent research in the broad field of sector analysis. The theoretical and empirical methods have been developed to analyze specific national situations and considerable knowledge has been accumulated.
A concerted action is proposed in order to achieve structural exchange of information and promote coordination of research programmes between the six major fisheries economics research instituts in the EC.
Among the major specific gaps of knowledge for which international cooperation is considered as a relevant tool are :
- standardization of relevant fleet segments; analysis are often incomparable because of different fleet segmentations or insufficient descriptions of the characteristics;
- regular European wide evaluation of the economic performance of the fleets;
- comparison of market developments and trends in international trade; this aspect may become very significant within the Single Market, where intra- European trade data may become difficult to obtain and to interpret;
- international exchanges on local fisheries policy and its economic consequences.
