ACOUSTIC PROPERTIES OF FISH AND THEIR EXPLOITATION IN CLASSIFICATION SCHEMES FOR FISH STOCK ASSESSMENT

Objective

The overall objective of the project is to reduce the bias in acoustic survey estimates of fish abundance. This can be divided into three specific objectives:

a) To increase our knowledge on acoustic scattering properties of fish. In this project a systematic, controlled experiment on caged or semi-enclosed populations will be performed with the same equipment as used in the field in order to measure target strength. It will be possible to isolate both control and experimental populations, and quantitatively study changes in target strength as a function of the physiological state of the fish. Target strength data gathered on natural populations will be compared with the ones obtained in the experiment.
b) To improve classification and partitioning of fish species from acousTIc records. Software for characterizing acoustically recorded schools will be developed using a Unix platforms, and software for this, including the network, shared. Parameters measured on each school will be identified at the specifying stage of the software. When classification algorithms for fish schools are proven to be stable, data sets for layers of fish and single fish recordings will be sampled and characterized for application in the classification module.
c) To improve the quality of measurements of fish close to the sea bed. Data sets containing the raw data from the digitizing unit in the EK-500 echo sounder will be collected over areas of typical habitats for demersal fish in the North Sea, from the Barents Sea, and in the Mediterranean. Captured data will be the amplitude and phase angles, with a typical resolution of 2 - 10 cm, depending on frequency and bandwidth.
