LAND USE SYSTEMS IN THE MEDITERRANEAN MOUNTAINS AND MARGINAL LANDS

Objective

The objective of the research is to assess in the Mediterranean mountainous and marginal areas the impact of subsidies derived from EC policies on livestock grazing practices and subsequently to develop appropriate grazing practices for a rational management of natural resources compatible with economic and environmental factors. Three study regions are identified in Corsica, Crete and Liguria (Italy, Greece and France).

4 tasks will be carried out:

1) assess the impact of EC subsidies on local economies and livestock restructuring and grazing practices;
2) analyse land use change in relation to the development mentioned above;
3) to study the impact of different livestock practices on the natural resource;
4) to determine appropriate grazing practices, compatible with environment.
