Injured nerve fibres in the spinal cord are unable to regenerate. Consequently, individuals who have sustained such injuries suffer from lifelong and seriously disabling loss of sensory and/or motor functions. The project has addressed the problem of overcoming spinal cord regeneration failure, focusing on the injuries to the fibres which convey sensory impulses from the periphery to the spinal cord. These fibres fail to re-enter the spinal cord after injury. The teams have provided convincing experimental evidence that this regeneration failure can be overcome by: 1) Replacing the injured neurons with embryonic nerve cells. 2) Immediate administration of specific growth factors. 3) The implantation of growth-promoting non-neuronal cells at the place where these fibres normally enter the spinal cord. Although additional experimental work is needed, the results obtained justify an optimistic long term view on the possibilities in a future to restore some degree of sensory functions in patients with brachial plexus avulsion, the clinical condition resembling the experimental models explored in the project.
