NON CONTACT REAL TIME DEFECTS DETECTION DURING THE MANUFACTURING OF A STRUCTURED FABRIC

Objective

At the end of the project the following results were reached:

1) the loom was stopped in real time at every defect detection
2) globally the efficiency of the system, taking into account all possible defects that can be produced over the fabric on the loom, was of a percentage of 73%
3) if we only take as a basis the most frequent defects (such as space and slub) the percentage of efficiency of ODILE was of 74%
4) when the vibrations induced from the adjacent looms to the loom under test were at low level, the system carried out very correct working
4) the other types of noise (dust and electric interferences) have been eliminated by functional characteristics of the demonstrator.
The aim of this project is the study and development of an optoelectronic system able to detect defects during the weaving of a fabric. Optical Fourier transform and spatial filtering are the used techniques.

The detection in real time will allow to stop the loom and to repair the faults on line with direct improvement of quality as well as time and cost reduction in the mending phase. Almost all defects can be reduced during the manufacture and about 70% of defects types can be repaired if detected early enough. The system will be modular in the sensitive part in order to monitor different regions of the fabric just weaved or the overall width.

The principal goals are, reliability and cost of the equipment. A target price will be considered of between 7% and 10% of the average cost of a loom.

This technique can be used off line in the cloth inspecting machine or in other processes involving flexible materials with a periodic structure.

The system is called ODILE, acronym of On-line-Defects Identification on the Loom Equipment.
