Objective
This proposal is the result of a concerted European gas turbine industry effort. The aim of the programme is to develop a new Ceramic Matrix Composite material for use at temperatures of 1400 C and above. It is intended to carry out processing development in a range of areas and testing to demonstrate the material's potential. Four topics will be addressed:
1. Fibre/matrix interface development
2. Composite manufacture and extension of the technology to complex shapes
3. Mechanical testing of the composite
4. Application of the material to simple prototype component.
The development of a material capable of operation above 1400 C is necessary to produce cleaner and more efficient gas turbine engines. Such improvements are vital for European gas turbine manufacturers, both aeronautical and industrial, because of the constant competitive pressure from the USA. Given that the European industry has the opportunity to win business worth 80 billion ECU over the next 20 years, it is very important to maintain a strong competitive position. The programme proposed in this project will contribute significantly to this goal.
The involvement of a major research centre will provide opportunities for training in a large international collaborative programme.
