DESIGN AND PILOT TESTING OF A REMOTE CONTROLLED MICROTUNNEL BORING MACHINE (MTBM) FOR COMPETENT ROCK

Objective

The objective is to design, fabricate and field-test a micro TBM for excavating non man-entry, horizontal holes in competent rock; these holes will serve as conduits for services, investigations, and drainage.

The following preliminary specifications are assumed.

A micro TBM of 1,6m diameter (proposed here) is the average value needed for economic and rapid excavation of (non man-entry) horizontal holes to provide hydraulic transport (water, slurry, gas), service conduits (ventilation, power lines), emergency escape ways (including rescue of trapped miners), and pilot tunnels for increased geomechanical knowledge in advance of construction. In addition, the MTBM will also be useful in advance drainage of methane and water and hydrological knowledge in the tunnel design.

The current annual market of 14 MECU is 4,5 times the total cost to the proposed research which goes on for 3 years.
