Objective
It is proposed to develop machining processes to generate high precision surfaces under gemetrically defined conditions. Processes like grinding and honing will be substituted by processes such as fine boring, turming and surface milling. Futhermore it is intended to avoid the use of cooling lubriciants for these processes as far as possible.
(i) determination of the fundamental mechanism of surface generation for high-precision cutting with a defined cutting edge
(ii) investigation of suitable cuttin-edge materials and cutting-edge patterns for high-precision machining of steel, cast iron an aluminium
(iii) development of fine boring, turning and surface milling processes in connection with machining test on a technical demonstrator to be constructed
(iv) development of new manufacturing strategies for cost efficient, proenvirometal, high-precision machining processes
Succesful completion should yield savings investment of processing equipment for manufacturing engines about 2% of the overall investment, with a corresponding reduction in manufacturing costs.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
