Objective
The project is designed to meet the needs of industry for the economic production of light weight components in magnesium and aluminium alloys to near net shape using semi solid processing. Such components will save energy when incorporated into machines for example in automobiles or telecommunications. The introduction of the semi solid technology into the manufacturers plant will improve the safety and the environment for the workers involved.
The project will apply technology developed in a previous EURAM programme for the production of thixotropic magnesium and it will be extended to cover aluminium based alloys.
The project will address all stages of the technology including the production of feedstock by passive stirring and novel techniques, the development and optimisation of the reheating apparatus using induction heating and also the semi automatic manipulation of the reheated billets from the coil to the shot sleeve. It will also establish the pressure die casting conditions required to produce thin wall (2mm) pore free castings in excess of 150 cubic centimetres.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
