Exploitable results

A sample preparation method has been developed for samples of polymer modified binders in order to acquire images under a microscope with fluorescent light. The sample preparation method is unique because the images that are obtained from the microscope analysis are well focused and influences of edge effects are removed. The industrial benefit from this sample preparation is concentrated on possibilities of producing improved and durable polymer modified binders. The sample preparation method contributes to an improvement of and durability of polymer modified binders.
The image processing system is capable of scanning a sample of polymer modified bitumen submitted to fluorescent light. The images can then be analysed using image analysing techniques such as size of objects, shape of objects and a phase distribution. The results obtained from the image processing system have been compared with chemical and physical properties of the polymer modified binders. The conclusion of the work has been that predictions of mechanical properties can be made using the developed image processing system.
