Objetivo Total amount of time spent by people in travelling is constantly increasing. In the mean time, people are becoming more sensitive to consequences of environmental discomfort on their health. Vibrations are one of the major sources of discomfort for long traveling times and therefore there is a potential market for minimizing these effects. It is proposed to develop an Active Contol system for reducing the vibration level experienced by drivers and passengers when seated in transport vehicles, such as cars, buses, trucks, trains. So far reseavh has been mainly concentrated on the reduction of noise by various means including passive and acitve control. Studies are also conducted on anti-vibration systems but they are mainly based on passive, eventually "intelligent" passive technique. Development of anti-vibration systems based on Active Control is presently limited by the difficulty of designing Actuators with suitable characteristics (high level displacements, low volume, low cost, good eficiency in a wide frequency band). The proposed programme includes innovative reseach on Actuators oriented towards antivibration systems for vehicle seats. The reseach will make use of "intelligent" materials such as advanced piezoelectric ceramics and new magnetostrictive alloys. The proposed programme includes the foolowing taks :- In situ data acquisition (onboard vehicles) and signal analysis. - Development of prototype hardware including (Actuators, Sensors, Contol Unit). - Research on Control Strategy and algorithm to be incorporated in the Control Unit. - Laboratory testing of Active Control System Prototye, - In-situ Evaluation (on-board vehicle) of Active Control System protoftype, - Survey of other sources of discomfort and definition of a riding comfort index.Although the proposed programme includes an In-situ prototype evaluation, the commercial development of the system would necessitate an additional 2 years engineering phase. First application would e for professional driver seats (trucks, bases, taxis, locomotives...)
