Objective
The enhancement of synchronizing cones performances by laser surface processing has been carried out. 11 new sinterized steels were produced, treated by laser with many different working parameters and the results tested and analysed. The steels that presented the best performances to laser processing were also laser treated by using many different coatings and diverse thicknesses and different deposition methods, keeping in mind the possible final ratio of price to performance. Many metallurgical and metallographical studies followed this basic investigation; so that, only 4 new types of sinterized steels were chosen for further researches. 2 different traditional sinterized steel synchro rings were laser treated and then four new types (for design, geometry and steel) were also laser treated. Finally, a new type of sinterized steel synchro crown, laser treated and coupled with a traditional synchros ring, was also tested. All these rings and crowns were laser treated under different working conditions and according to 2 basic workplans: treatments by a constant laser power value or treatments by a surface constant temperature. For the temperature treatments, a new data base and process control software were employed. The best results were sent for cured metallurgical analyses and verification of mechanical properties, and enhancement of performances (axial loads, maximum permissible speeds, friction torque, friction coefficient, wear, synchronizing time, etc). During a process optimization task, the quality to cost ratio of the new synchros was evaluated and compared with 2 traditional rings. A large number of other potential direct and indirect applications of this new laser technology and arrangements and temperature device detector and closed loop working system could be applied for other components for the same type of industries and/or different mechanical industries.
