Objective
1) In pneumatic conveying, space charge density is a much more likely control of tribocharging than specific charge on the powder.
2) Where powder has been centrifugally compressed, such as in a cyclone, the greater space charge density close to the pipe wall increases likelihood of powder adhesion.
3) Electrical neutralisers provide a good local discharging effect, whilst additives can be effective at lowering charge throughout powder handling systems.
4) The specific charge of cement after milling or mixing is quite low. Nevertheless, electrical forces seems to affect the efficiency of the milling process, especially with some cement types.
5) High voltage A.C. neutralizers, when properly installed, can substitute partially the liquid milling additive providing the power is adequate for the mill size.
6) Research into new milling additives will reduce power consumption, but the dosification and the efficiency must be determined by laboratory and industrial tests for every mill and every cement type.
7) Segregation of powder mixtures during transport and storage could be an important factor of inhomogeneity. This is very important in relatively coarse powders, i.e. the raw mix.
Electrostatic charges are the cause of problems in many industries where powdered materials are manufactured or processed. Electrostatic hazards are now well understood, but powder handling and processing problems still occur which can reduce quality and productivity, leading to inferior products and higher costs.
At the root of these difficulties is a lack of understanding of their cause and a lack of appropriate solutions. By focusing attention on specific powder manufacturing difficulties of one of the partners, the group will :
- Quality electrostatic problems on plant after adapting and developing suitable multifunction measuring instrumentation
- compare various charge control techniques, establish their limitations, make improvements and develop a prototype neutralizer specifically for powders
- check the efficiency of these improved charge control techniques both in the laboratory and on site
- give the basis for developing a feedback specific neutralizer.
