Concepts for Transportation and Loading of Containers

Objectif

Complete new design for a 2 - dimensional laser scanner, applicable to a wide range of purposes, tested on the pilot straddle, good detection capability for obstacles and container walls, laser scanner post-processor provides obstacle detection and wall guidance under fixed laboratory test conditions, algorithms have to be improved for real operation with uneven ground, corrugated container side-walls and heavy engine vibration, further research work required, OCR reader has not been further investigated, because earlier user evaluation in task 2.1 showed, that this objective is of less interest due to new developments in transponder target technology;

Resource planning tool developed for a wide range of container terminal equipment, provides active link to the locating system, in-line assessment of operation and quick response to new scenarios at the terminal;
Complete locating system based on competitive components for satellite positioning, processing and data communication, tested by drivers as well as operators;
Several motion control functions and user interface alternatives developed and tested, selected set of functions demonstrated during final driver assessment, results are withim an accuracy of 15 cm, but have to be improved further for practical use in the daily operation.

Objectives and content
Worldwide container traffic increases year by year. At the same time, freight rates decrease. Some European container terminals hardly can cover operating costs. Therefore they have a strong need for automation.
In the case of BLG, the major container terminal operator at Bremerhaven, a fully automated solution with multiple types of transport vehicles, as it was implemented in Rotterdam, would not be applicable. It requires extremely high investment costs, has a strong negative impact on employment situation and reduces significantly the flexibility of the terminal.
BLG requests a smart solution, which could improve performance of existing straddle carriers, which is now limited to seven container shifts per hour on average. The following problem areas and possible solutions have been identified:
- Eliminate human errors in identification and placement of containers by optical sensors and position detectors
- Optimize terminal operation with simulation tools
- Reduce unexpected damage by condition based maintenance
- Lower operating costs for tyre wear, fuel consumption a.o. by automatic acceleration, braking, and curve driving
- Increase working speed along a line of containers by automatic guidance - Improve working conditions with reduced weekend and night loading due to raised efficiency, allow relief from routine operations, reduce driver learning time
A further objective of the project is to reduce the environmental impact due to noise and pollution of straddle carrier operation and to increase competitiveness of "short sea shipping" (requiring more container shifts) compared to truck transport.
The consortium comprises an end-user of straddle carriers (BLG), the major manufacturer of straddle carriers (STS with product Valmet), a SME specialising in production of optical electronics (Riegl), an institute for research on machine automation (VTT), an institute for research on terminal simulation and the coordinator (STN ATLAS4specialising in system integration and position detectors.

Programme(s)
