Advanced Control Network

Objetivo

Objectives and content

Effective process control is of critical importance in ensuring that very complex plant operates at peak efficiency whilst maintaining the highest standards of safety and environmental performance. There are, however, few non-vendor specific standards and thus there is a major industrial need for a revolution in the manner in which such process control systems are developed. In particular; new tools are required to speed the industrial take-up of opportunities presented by the emerging fieldbus technologies.
ACORN will bring together a major automation systems vendor, an innovative software house and technology end users from the European Process Industries together with the leading applied research organisations in the field.
The prime objective and innovation of the ACORN project is the development and validation of a highly flexible CASE toolkit to support the management and control of the design and implementation of the next generation of open, highly distributed control systems. The main components of the toolkit will be tools for application design, resource management, configuration management and simulation. These tools will be open systems compatible and will therefore be equally applicable to FIP or PROFIBUS networks as to any emerging common network standard.

The tools will be verified by using them to- design two pilot applications. The first will be implemented on a chemical plant with demanding intrinsic safety requirements whilst the second will involve a study to assess the impact of the tools in the context of the design of new power stations. Additional reference data will be drawn from other end users via the ACORN User Council.

A co-ordinated project exploitation strategy has been outlined, the execution of which will be overseen by an experienced marketing professional. Additionally, each participant has outlined the expected benefits to their organisation and to European Industry as a whole. These data confirm that ACORN will be one important component in the rapid take-up of the full benefits of fieldbus dependent technology by the European Process Industries.
