Composites and Advanced Aircraft Technologies Electromagnetic Protection

Objectif

Objectives and content
Electromagnetic Environmental Effects have become of increased concern as regards the flight safety for civil aircraft. This is due to the increased use of potentially vulnerable aircraft equipment and systems performing functions required for continued safe flight and landing and to the increased use of composite structural materials. During the past decades, the European aircraft industry has gained an increasing share of the worldwide commercial aircraft market. This is mainly due to innovative techniques. It is of extremely strategic importance to maintain and strengthen this advantage over competitors outside of Europe. This can be achieved by a combination of an increased use of composite materials and new advanced electronic technologies where Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) will play a strategic important role.
The first operational generation of IMA will probably be installed inside composite aircraft structures. The combination of composite material and IMA requires powerful analysis tools to take care of Electromagnetic aspects in the design phase of new aircraft. This project addresses three main problems related to new technologies for the next generation of civil aircraft:
- Electromagnetic coupling through composite materials and techniques to increase the shielding effectiveness of composites.
-Electromagnetic design guidelines for IMA installed inside composite aircraft structures.
-Guidelines for how to use existing Electromagnetic modelling techniques as a powerful design tool for complex composite aircraft structures.
Initially all state of the art, new or aggravated sources will be described. A generic object in composite material will be defined and manufactured. This generic object will represent an aircraft composite structure including windows, access door, cabling etc. This object will be investigated with theoretical modelling techniques and by measurements of the Electromagnetic coupling through the structure and to internal devices such as cables and equipment. Internal fields and currents, which might result in equipment malfunction, will be calculated. Different combinations of Electromagnetic protection methods will be modelled and investigated. The internal environment which will affect IMA and conventional equipment will be used to develop Electromagnetic design guidelines for IMA architectures and modifications of conventional equipment installed inside composite structures. Guidelines for how to use existing modelling techniques as a powerful design tool for complex composite structures will be developed. As existing modelling techniques so far have only been validated for simple objects, there is a strong need to develop guidelines for how to use these modelling techniques as a design tool for complex composite aircraft structures for the next generation of civil aircraft.
The results can be used as a first version of a European handbook on Electromagnetic design guidelines for new advanced technologies inside composite structures.
The consortium comprises manufacturers of aerospace and avionic products and one test centre from four countries in the European Union.

Champ scientifique (EuroSciVoc)
