The project has developed and proven a wire-less system for the monitoring of strain creep and movement in industrial plant at high temperatures up to 600 degrees Celsius. The strain sensor is monitored by means of a radio Frequency (RF) link to an external interrogation system. The system has been demonstrated in the ‘dead-space’ or ‘penthouse’ at around 350 degrees Celsius of a coal fired power generating plant in Spain. Long-term sensor unit testing has been carried out in a laboratory oven at 600 degrees Celsius. The sensor system is based on Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) devices fabricated from Gallium Orthophosphate (GaPO4). It uses the SAW devices to receive and store energy from a received RF interrogation pulse. This energy is stored by the SAW devices and characterised according to the positional /strain information. The energy is then retransmitted to the interrogation unit. The project has proven and demonstrated the feasibility of remote wireless sensing in severe environments up to 600 degrees Celsius. This is a world first demonstration of such a concept. Further development is planned to realise and extend the capability for industrial availability.
