Vehicle Thermal Management

Objectif

The ability to bring new vehicles to market rapidly is a major determinant of competitive advantage within the world automotive industry. Vehicle thermal management is an area of increasing importance in new vehicle product development, consuming significant resources and constituting a large proportion of the total time-to-market. Ricardo are leading a European Consortium (VTHERM) to develop new Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) methods in this area of the design process to provide a competitive advantage in the form of substantial reductions in the time-to-market for new products.
In brief, the objectives of the project are to develop CAE thermal management software which will:

Deliver substantial benefits in the time-to-market of new
vehicles (of typically at least 4 months).
Provide fuel savings through engine cooling system efficiency gains made possible through the use of this technology.
Improve the durability of engine compartment electronics modules (such as engine management systems) by reducing under-bonnet temperatures by at least 10 C.
Contribute to the achievement of EU noise and emission
legislation through engine encapsulation and fast warm-up catalyst systems.

The major innovation from this project will be the capability to rapidly generate and solve detailed CFD models of the engine compartment and external flow, coupled with a thermal system model of the whole vehicle. This will be possible from:

The use of combined feature-based solid and surface CAD modelling to define vehicle and powertrain geometry.
Fully automatic mesh generation for complete engine compartment and associated external flow CFD solution direct from a variety of CAD geometry sources. Typical model sizes of 1,000,000 computational mesh cells and greater are expected.
The construction of a complete powertrain and vehicle thermal system model.
The construction of specific models for all major system
components
The ability to focus on the level of detail required for solving specific problems - from the complete system to local geometric details, through the integration of detailed CFD and system models.
Further to these technical advances, the VTHERM software will have a robust structure to allow accurate, consistent and relevant analyses to be performed in an environment that is easy to use yet powerful. These user requirements will be addressed by the following features:
A modular software architecture with formalised data exchange methods between design and analysis and within the analysis itself.
A rigorous foundation of validation data covering all key aspects of the model for a variety of vehicle applications, from small car to truck, and operating conditions, from steady state to extreme ambient warm-up/cooling performance and transient test cycles.
Integration into an end-user environment.

Champ scientifique (EuroSciVoc)
