Mechanical Integrity for Advance Transmission Systems

Objectives and content
This Brite Euram RTD Industrial Research Proposal
addresses task 3A.3.13 of the IMT workprogramme. It has
the aim to deliver an integrated package of work to meet
today's and the future needs of the mechanical prime
mover and power transmission industries.
The target objectives for the programme are to develop
design rules, new component and analytical methods by
experimental and theoretical means. This will improve
the fundamental understanding of the interrelationships
between individual transmission components; such as: oily
chamber sealing, oil churning and oil fires in bearing
chambers, gear lubrication, and two-phase flow
separation. By doing so it is anticipated that product
safety, reliability, and efficiency can be increased,
whilst reducing the impact on the environment.
The work will be implemented by 13 partners, from 4
countries; France, United Kingdom, Germany and Belgium,
who have been drawn from the aero engine gas turbine,
helicopter, and component supply industries, and four
universities. To ensure effective consortium management
the workprogramme has been divided into 4 workpackages,
namely:
Workpackage A The development and evaluation of lift
augmented seal designs
Workpackage B The design of two-phase air/oil flow
separators and breathers
Workpackage C The understanding of the fundamentals of
vent pipe two phase
flow, heat-to-oil in bearing chambers, film dynamic, and
oil fires
Workpackage D Gear lubrication, cooling and power loss.
The approach taken by the consortium will be one of an
integrated programme, where results from one workpackage
will be fed into another, through its management
structure. The driver for the proposal has been taken
from the industrial partners requirements to be more
competitive, against US and Pacific Rim companies.
Whilst, providing a foundation from which European
Manufacturing industries can significantly improve their
products, to sustain the commercial, economic and
manufacturing competitiveness of the community.
