Development and application of new carbon nitride coatings in cutting tools

Objetivo

Objectives and content
In the field of thin films for wear applications, a large
research effort is devoted to the preparation of
superhard crystalline thin films. Effectively, hardness
is required for abrasive wear resistance and covalent
hard coatings are interesting for low sticking and low
friction. Although diamond and cubic boron nitride are
ultrahard materials, owing to its instability at high
temperatures, diamond cannot be used, for example, in
cutting tools for steel. Problems of adhesion and
internal stress of this kind of coatings have been also
found. For these reasons and for the need of replace
expensive diamond in many applications, new hard
materials with comparable or even superior properties are
required. New carbon nitride compounds have been
predicted to be stable with hardness comparable to that
of diamond.
The first objective of the present project is to
establish reproducible synthesis routes of new carbon
nitride (CNX, C3N4, M-CNX with M=Si,B) hard coatings.
The methods reported up to now in the literature and also
new developed routes of preparation will be tested within
the project. The second objective of the project is the
evaluation of the physical and chemical characteristics
of the films in respect to their practical applications.
Hardness, friction coefficient, adhesion, thermal and
electrical conductivity, chemical resistance, light
transparency, among other properties will be evaluated.
The control of the preparation parameters to obtain
microcrystalline or nanocrystalline films that can
combine ultrahard conditions with good tribological and
wear properties is another goal of the project.
Industrial applications of superhard materials so far
have been dominated by superabrasives. In particular the
difficult-to-cut materials like steels, MMC's
(Al+1020%SiC) and INCONEL are of fundamental interest in
Automotive, Aircraft, Defence, Space, Electronic and
Sporting industry.
The test of carbon nitride coated tools in industrial
conditions is the final objective of the project. In
aeronautical field, for instance, the application of this
kind of tools could reduce the machining time of the
component from 20% up to 60%. The cost reduction per
component machined could be evaluated approximately 35%.
The know-how of difficult-to-cut materials with coated
tools, the technical and economical analysis of the
processes developed during the project and the design of
a demonstrator manufactured using the developed tools
complete the work plan of the present project. The
possible applications of the new carbon nitride coatings
for optical or electronic devices will be also
considered.
The Consortium comprises two research centres (ICMSE,
ILM-CNR) and two laboratories at the University (ECL;
UAM) experienced in the field of synthesis and
characterisation of thin films and coatings, a complex
tool manufacturer (VERGNANO), a manufacturer and supplier
of equipment for preparation of coatings at industrial
scale (HEF), a company for ion implantation and surface
modification on industrial tools (AIN) and an end-user
from the Automotive and Aerospace industry (FIAT).
