Advanced propulsion systems and emission reduction technologies

Objectif

PREMTECH
PROJECT OVERVIEW

The project intends to establish a network linking Community funded projects in the field of advanced propulsion systems and emission reduction technologies. The mission of the projects belonging to the network is the development of energy
efficient, competitive ultralow and near zero emission IC
(International Combustion) Engines running on conventional or cleaner fuels.

The PREMTECH network intends to ensure that the development of advanced propulsion systems and aftertreatment reduction
technologies is well defined and suited to the targeted
objectives of the industry : this represents the added value of the network to the work currently carried out by the projects. The network will also ensure that the integration among
projects for a better extension of different technological
options can take place and that new needs and requirements,
dictated by the future evolution of fuel consumption and
emissions standards, are properly taken into account.
To achieve the network objectives, four major developmental
areas of the network projects are identified :
* advanced propulsion systems for Otto cycle engines,
* advanced propulsion systels for Diesel cycle engines,
* control systems,
* after-tretament systems;
while the network activity is structured in three phases :
* definition and refinement of Common Interets Matrix,
* comparative assessment and virtual demonstration,
* state of the art, dissemination and best practice.

EUROPEAN DIMENSION AND PARTNERSHIP

The added value for implementing the network is represented by the interactions, that will be generated among different
European companies, with the possibility to exert a significant impact on the improvement of the European technology. In many cases no EU vehicle manufacturer as alone can rely on a
sufficient volume of vehicles able to support the development cost of a true industrial automotive product like it occurs
with HD city vehicles, being regional market. The network
offers the opportunity to overcome this difficulty for carrying out the development at national level by comparing different technologies. Another network element is the assessment of the potential of new propulsion technologies. This element is to be seen as an instrument for regional authorities to meet air quality objectives in specific non-attainment areas once
measures required on community level alone are not sufficient. As it is not the intention to require such solutions for air pollution abatement on community level it is necessary to
provide the corresponding definition of the technology to
assure that on the one hand the environmentally bets solutions will be taken and on the other hand the European industry will not be confronted with an enormous variety of technical
requirements from differing regional authorities thus removing, through the legislation, a potential barrier to the wide spread commercial introduction of advanced propulsion systems into the marketplace.

POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS

The requested innovative technologies involve the EU automotive industry, as Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), and
component manufacturers, such as suppliers of catalysts,
electronic control systems, sensors, etc. Then the set-up of a network covering advanced propulsion systems and emission
reduction technologies has a basic character applicable to
several European sectors. The strong interest of EUCAR, that is the permanent organization of European OEMs for research in the field of automotive, has been clearly expressed in its
master plan where advanced propulsion systems and emission
reduction technologies have received the most pronounced
attention. Many European OEMs are directly involved in the
Brite-Euram projects dealing with such a matter. Then they are interested to join a network that will strengthen the efforts carried out by single projects.

Programme(s)
