CAPE.Net was a Thematic Network in the field of Computer Aided Process Engineering (CAPE): the application of a systems modelling approach to the study of whole processes, together with their control, safety, utility and environmental protection systems, as an integrated whole, from the viewpoints of development, design and operation of chemical (including oil, food, pharmaceutical etc.) manufacturing processes. The network objectives were research co-ordination and technology transfer. The project focussed on the following aspects of CAPE: Unit Process Modelling, Whole Process Synthesis and Integration, Flexibility Operability and Dynamics, Concurrent Process Engineering, and Model Based Manufacturing. Each area was tackled by a Technical Working Group (TWG). The following key points were achieved: -Each TWG prepared documents describing the scope and vision, state of the art, case studies, industrial needs and research priorities. A list of Centres of Expertise and education and training requirements were also assembled. The key research priorities for each TWG can be found later in this report and on the Web site. -Six technical workshops were held to debate some of the research priorities in the TWG areas and areas of common interest. -A Web site (http://capenet.chemeng.ucl.ac.uk ) was established and all documents are now available either directly on the site or as downloadable documents. The Web site has links to other related initiatives. The Web site will remain available for the immediate future. -A final two day seminar was held in London attended by 130 people. A CD Rom of the Web site and the presentations at the final seminar has been distributed to all CAPE.Net members, attendees at the seminar, and to members of other related initiatives. Copies are available on request subject to availability. -Eleven Technology Transfer events were held in regions of Europe to introduce small and medium companies to the benefits of the use of CAPE tools. -The network was expanded to include three extra partners (two industrial and one academic) who participated with their own resources as associate members. -Strong interactions were maintained with related initiatives in Europe and with CEFIC, the European Council for the Chemical Industry. -To implement the vision from CAPE.Net, in collaboration with CEFIC and the European Federation of Chemical Engineers a multi-national EUREKA-supported initiative CAPE-21 has been launched to define a managed and co-ordinated programme of networking, tools development, infrastructure development, dissemination & technology transfer.
