The development of an automated system for the cutting and planting of rose cuttings

Objectif

The propagation of roses by cuttings is one of the most applied (propagation) methods. At present the cutting and planting of pot roses is a manual process/procedures. The rnajor (technical) limitations are the low productivity and the variations in quality. Moreover, it is a boring job. Therfore, the objective ofthe intended R&D-project is to develop an automated system for the cutting and planting of rose cuttings which has the following specifications: 1) a high productivity (2 7200 cuttings/h), 2) a high and uniform quality, and 3) a short through-put time (reduction of the chance of infection). The proposed system will be composed of a number of innovative techniques, such as a recognition (vision) system, a robotic system and a handling clip system. Preliminary estimates show that the potential benefits (industrial impact) of such a system are favourable compared to the (development) costs. A prototype will be built whicch will provides the data for the design of a commercial automated system for the cutting and planting of rose cuttings. The consortium consists of developers and endusers ofthe proposed system.
