Exploitable results

COPPERPLAS focused on the development of effective copper alloy mould tooling to provide production process benefits for the European plastics processing industry. The project concentrated activity on injection moulding. Aim of the project : The development of cost effective copper alloy injection mould tooling to enable the EU plastics processing industry to maintain and extend its competitive position in global markets. Project results - New technical knowledge acquired for mould tool development options - The heat transfer properties of copper alloy moulds fully quantified - Preliminary injection moulding trials indicate potential productivity gains as high as 33 - Welding repair techniques developed but rigorous injection moulding trials needed to prove operational longevity - Significant increase in injection moulding machine utilization - Average reduction in cycle time 20% to 25% conclusions - Copper alloys have excellent potential in the plastics moulding industry - Mould design may maximize cooling and reduce mould tool cost - Quality of moulded components is consistent, scrap percentage reduced - Insufficient time to realistically assess long term durability
