Objective
Exhaust emissions have traditionally been regarded as the price which must be paid to gain the many benefits of the use of internal combustion engines. Over recent years public pressure has dictated that these emissions are reduced to protect the environment and people's health, as a result of which, legislation and European Directives, such as COM (95) 350, have been introduced to restrict the level of permissible emissions from all new engines. The problem remaining to be addressed however, is the fact that at any given point in time over 70% of all engines in use are over three years old, with many exceeding twenty years old. With this type of aging engine population, legislation for new engines would take 10 - l5 years to yield true benefits. All strategies to treat exhaust emissions have focussed on the use of after-treatment technology such as Catalysts and Particulate Filters. Catalysts are very effective at treating gaseous emissions, but leave the particulates visibly untreated, Particulate Filters, on the other hand, whilst being effective, are prohibitively expensive, @ circa 8 KECU, as a retro-fit strategy, - this results in little action being taken to effectively treat smoke emissions from diesel engines. This development project seeks to exploit a novel method of fuel delivery for diesel engines, which could be almost universally retrofitted and solves the polution emission problem, by improving engine combustion performance and eliminating smoke production. The aim of the project is to treat the cause of diesel smoke rather than try to treat the after effects.
