Objectif
The following achievements have been obtained:
The requirements of the pipes have been determined and a selection of compounds of recycled PTFE has been tested in connection with the development of a new sinter process. Compounds have been sintered to compact cylinders, peeled to foils, formed to a tube with an overlapping area to be welded. As PTFE is not weld able the overlapping part of the foil has been made out of a modified and weld able PTFE. Consequently, a small layer of modified PTFE was added to the bulk good in the upper and lower part of the mould, compacted and sintered together with the compound. Modified, weld able PTFE in the margins of the foil has been proven to be an excellent method for welding PTFE tubes based on virgin or recycled material. Different welding devices have been developed and tested. On the basis of these results a prototype device for continous sheet-to-pipe welding has been tested successfully. By the receipt of two contracts for the delivery of about 50.000 m of welded virgin PTFE-pipes the manufacture and the put into operation of a production line was enabled. These two orders of delivery make clear in a conclusive way: The welding process and the welded pipes have been accepted by the market without any delay.
The production of welded tubes mainly consisting of recycled PTFE has been proven to be practicable but additional investment is necessary. There is no doubt, recycled PTFE will come into the market in a second step a little later. For the moment the welded tubes based on virgin material are welcome to the market on a half price basis compared to conventional PTFE tube qualities. A further price reduction of about 20 percent will come along with pipes on a mainly recycled PTFE basis.
Built in heat exchanger for aggressive media e.g. incineration plants, the pipes out of PTFE have the best resistance against corrosion. At the present time, there is no cost effective procedure to manufacture these thin walled PTFE pipes. The RTD goal of this proposal is to develop a new technology to produce the pipes which is characterised by the following items * substantial reduction of manufacturing time and costs, * low expenditure for raw material by the use of recycled PTFE. In order to develop the technology for a most broad use a detailed analyse of possible applications is going to be examined. Therefore also producers of heat exchangers participate in the project. Additional users are searched in terms of a later dissemination of the technology and a competent background for further developments. In connection with the use of recycled PTFE a basis for an European quality standard regarding properties and application is intended to be set up.
