PTFE pipes are actually used in corrosion-resistant heat exchangers for heat displacement around DENOX (Plants for N0x-reduction) and FGD (Flue gas desulfurization, plants for S0x removal) applications that are operated at temperatures below the sulfuric acid dew point. The existing technologies for the manufacture of PTFE tubes are limited either by low process speed and the restriction to thick walled tubes (RAM-extrusion) or by high material and production costs of PTFE extrusion grades (Fluorothermoplastics), suitable for the production of thin walled PTFE-tubes. Thin walled pipes made of paste extrusion grades or PFA have excellent characteristics of temperature and corrosion-resistance comparable to PTFE but the purchase price for these raw materials and the production costs are extremely high. The main objective of the project, the development of an effective working process for the manufacture of welded thin walled PTFE pipes, has been reached. The exploitation of this new development as an economical alternative to the present PTFE tube programme has recently started by the manufacture of a production line and by incoming orders for the delivery of more than 50 000meters of welded pipes to be installed in heat exchangers of DENOX and FGD plants.
