Melaminated particleboards can generate economic loss when they are utilized in the manufacture of furniture and other products. The project was developed to ascertain the causes that make the melaminated particleboards abrasive and to obtain melaminated particleboards with low abrasiveness and splintering by means of the formulation of the melamine resin and improvements on particleboard characteristics. For this purpose, a 'short-term' mechanizing test to evaluate the abrasiveness of these materials was employed. As a consequence, many variables related to the melamine formulation and particleboard manufacturing processes have been studied at the laboratory and on industrial scale, determining which of these variables are responsible for the aforementioned effects.
The research is significant in defining standards which would be included in Comite Europeen de Normalisation (CEN)/TC-249 SC3 WG4, that is:
the definition of a testing method to evaluate the abrasiveness of such materials;
to establish a specification related to the maximum accepted value of the abrasiveness of melaminated products.
Additional activities are necessary to transfer the achieved results into the commercial production of melaminated particleboards, as the obtained results and given recommendations to manufacturers of low abrasive melaminated particleboards are general suggestions. Each company wishing to exploit must adapt these recommendations to the needs of its own manufacturing process. Because of this, each company taking part in the research project must carry out definitive studies if they wish to exploit the results and achieve economical benefits from the knowledge provided by this research project.
