Objective
Multilayer films are widely used for food packaging. The drawbacks of such technology are:
1) complex and expensive processing (coextrusion)
2) not sufficient adhesion between the layers
3) High storage cost due to high weight and volume
4) difficulty to recyclable.
This project will be oriented to design thermoplastic innovatie formulations of multicomponent layers and monofilms having:
- tailored permeation to gases and moisture for application in food packaging.
- improved mechanical strength
- lower production costs
- much more possibility to be recycable.
We can conclude that:
- The activity of performers has been very satisfactory.
- The results confirm, at least on a laboratory scale, that it is possible, in principle, to use the philosophy of compatibilizers to obtain multilayers with no adhesive layer between the components.
- Moreover, the use of compatibilizers can produce monolayer films with good mechanical properties and with a morphology in the direction of internal multilayer, as requested by barrier monolayer films.
- The potential development of the above results could not be fully exploited, as the pilot plants do not possess all the facilities, like double bubble extrusion or intense mixer, which will permit full morphological control.
The fulfiment of the goals will permit:
- cost reduction in the production of films due to the possibility to use simpler manufacturing procedure
- the production of multicomponent monofilms for food packaging whose thickness is higly reduced compared to multilayer films
- easier recycle of plastic materials in packaging application.
